PITTSBURGH — Seneca Valley graduate Derek Peluso was one of three Point Park University athletes named 2011 NAIA Baseball Scholar-Athletes.

Peluso had a 3.53 GPA in economics and finance. The junior right-handed pitcher was the ace of the Point Park staff this season with a 7-1 record and a 3.42 ERA.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University landed five athletes on the Capital One Academic All-District team.Senior women's cross country and track and field members Jen Harpp, Amanda Seigworth and Allison Smith made the team as did two members of The Rock men's track and field team, junior Cameron Daugherty and freshman Chris Warning.Harpp was named to the first team for the third consecutive year.Seigworth and Smith were both named to the second team.Both Daugherty and Warning were also named to the second team.

KANE — Parker resident Shawn Courson shot a four-over-par 74 and finished second at a WPGA Amateur Qualifier at Kane Country Club Thursday.Courson and Mike Edwards (73) both advance to the WPGA Amateur Championship, to be played June 13-14 at Oakmont Country Club.<B></B>

DUBLIN, Ohio — Rory McIlroy only gets to play three regular PGA Tour events this year. He showed why the Memorial Tournament was one of them.On a Muirfield Village course that already ranks among his favorites, the 22-year-old from Northern Ireland had a birdie putt on his last eight holes and converted half of them on his way to a 6-under 66 to join Chris Riley in the lead after the first round.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Alex Burrows has avoided a suspension in the Stanley Cup finals after NHL officials decided they couldn't prove the Vancouver Canucks forward bit the finger of Boston's Patrice Bergeron.Burrows and Bergeron were involved in a skirmish after the first-period buzzer in Vancouver's 1-0 series-opening victory over the Bruins on Wednesday night.Television replays showed Bergeron apparently putting his gloved right index finger in Burrows' mouth.
