A standoff that began before the sun came up today ended before lunch hour.

Michael D’Antonio, 45, surrendered to police at 11 a.m. and was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for an evaluation. He is charged with making terroristic threats, a felony.

The incident took place at an apartment building at 120 W. Pearl St.

Butler Police Sgt. Dave Dalcamo said shortly before 5 a.m., police were called after a neighbor claimed D’Antonio verbally threatened him. The neighbor could not see if D’Antonio was carrying a gun, but claimed he heard the action of a gun.

Police attempted to make contact with D’Antonio, who was in the apartment alone, but he did not respond.

Butler Police Chief Tim Fennell called in the state police Special Emergency Response Team to assist.

At 10:52 a.m., state police set off a flash grenade, a tactical diversionary device meant to disorient. D’Antonio surrendered shortly afterward.

D’Antonio had a pellet gun, but Dalcamo said the gun did not have an orange tip and could easily be mistaken for a real gun.
