HARRISBURG — State corrections officials say that more than 1,100 inmates have returned to Pennsylvania prisons after being temporarily housed in Michigan for more than a year.

Corrections Secretary John Wetzel announced Friday that a slight decrease in Pennsylvania’s prison population combined with expansion projects allowed the convicts to return.

State prison officials moved inmates to Michigan and Virginia in early 2010 to alleviate overcrowding.

About 1,000 prisoners continue to be housed in Virginia. Wetzel says he hopes to return those inmates to Pennsylvania as soon as possible.

Trooper unlikely to face any chargesGREENSBURG — A Western Pennsylvania prosecutor says it’s unlikely a state trooper will face charges for fatally shooting a man outside his house on Christmas Eve.Troopers testifying at a coroner’s inquest Friday in Greensburg say the victim, 51-year-old Jeffrey Yohman, brandished a gun and threatened to kill them. Police say Yohman also pushed a trooper over a porch railing.The confrontation occurred when troopers responded to a domestic dispute call at Yohman’s home in Hempfield Township.Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck said after the inquest that the evidence points to justifiable homicide.Peck will make a final determination on filing charges after considering the recommendations of an inquest hearing officer.
