CHERRY TWP — The Moniteau School Board Monday night approved a proposed $18.4 million budget for 2011-12 that eliminates 25 professional positions.

“This is a very painful decision for all of us,” said school board President Douglas Kimmey. “We’ve looked at the budget extensively and on many levels, and we came up with the very best budget with what we’ve been given.”

The proposed budget is the result of several months of discussions aimed at closing a $1.3 million gap. It passed on an 8-0 vote.

Furlough notices were issued to the least-senior employees, including 14 professional employees, nine paraprofessionals and two custodians.

“It’s a very difficult situation,” said Superintendent George Svolos, citing decreased enrollment as a factor in the decision.

The proposed budget also uses $255,032 from the district fund balance.

Other measures in the proposed budget include instituting a fee for sports physicals, Advanced Placement examinations and student activities.

Susan Harris, vice president of Moniteau’s teachers union, said the union is open to discussing matters with the board, though no suggestions have yet been made.

“We are willing to discuss any cost-saving measures, but we haven’t been approached,” she said.
