Frank 'Mack' Cooper

Frank “Mack” McClelland Cooper, 84, of Slippery Rock died at 4 a.m. Friday at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Born Aug. 6, 1926, in New Castle, he was the son of Frank J. and Fanny Gill Cooper.

He graduated from Penn State University in 1951 as a member of the Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity.

He was a member of the Zion Baptist Church in Worth Township and the F. & A.M. Lodge 603 of Grove City. He was a former member of the Slippery Rock School Board. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, and they visited many foreign countries.

He was a self-employed farmer. Along with his wife and children, he owned and operated Cooper's Lake Campground for over 40 years. Among other events there, the Coopers host the annual Pennsic War for the Society of Creative Anachronism. This annual event hosts about 11,000 people traveling to the campground from all over the world for two weeks. The society is a non-profit organization that researches, recreates and re-enacts middle-ages society as well as enjoying great fellowship among the membership. Slippery Rock High School and Slippery Rock University regularly hold cross country meets at the campground. It recently hosted the NCAA Division II National Cross Country Meet.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Patterson Cooper, who he married on March 16, 1951, three sons, Kenneth E. Cooper, David B. and his wife, Anita, Cooper, and Alan F. and his wife, Linda, Cooper, all of Slippery Rock; two daughters, Judith C. and her husband, Frederick, Brezel, and Cynthia C. Tracy, all of Slippery Rock; and a sister, Joan Wilver of Slippery Rock.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jesse Cooper.

<B>COOPER</B> — Visitation for Frank “Mack” McClelland Cooper, 84, who died Friday, April 1, 2011, will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at <B>SMITH FUNERAL HOME</B>, 421 New Castle St. Slippery Rock. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas Meling, pastor of the Zion Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Zion Baptist Cemetery in Worth Township.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery Fund in care of Holly Lindey, 361 Country View Rd., Slippery Rock, Pa 16057.
