Tweets are just the thing to do
I’ve grown up during the greatest technological renaissance in history.
When I was a kid, there was no Internet. Computers were only beginning to come on the scene and not many households owned one.
Updated baseball statistics were hard to come by in any type of timely manner.
There was no instant access to news. There was no 24-hour news cycle.
I couldn’t get up-to-the-minute information on, well, just about anything on my computer screen, my iPad or my smart phone.
My phone was dumb back then.
Now, I can get news faster than a Milton Bradley meltdown.
I can even read the deepest, darkest thoughts of my favorite sports personalities on Twitter.
I signed up for my own, personal Twitter account recently. I had been using the Butler Eagle’s account — you know him as Scoop, the paper’s intrepid mascot — at football games from time to time, but I thought I should make one of my very own.
It was like crawling through a wardrobe and emerging in Narnia. The things you see on Twitter.
My first challenge was deciding who to follow.
Think of an athlete, any athlete, and he or she is on Twitter.
I immediately thought of Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson.
Last season, after he dropped a sure touchdown pass in overtime against the Steelers that would have given Buffalo a win, he tweeted, “I praise you 24/7!!!!!! and this how you do me!!!!! You expect me to learn from this??? How???!!! Ill never forget this!! ever!!! Thx Tho...”
A classic tweet. I have to follow him.
After then following the usual suspects, ESPN The Magazine senior writer Buster Olney, NFL Live host Trey Wingo, SportsNation host Michelle Beadle and NFL insider Adam Schefter, I decided to search for people who probably would think a tweet is something a bird does.
Not surprisingly, Bills coach Chan Gailey does not have a Twitter account. And not surprisingly there is a FireChanGailey account.
Click. Follow.
Bill Parcells? Nope. Ralph Wilson? Nope. The Bills owner probably still uses Pony Express to send messages.
And then there is my favorite name in all of sports, Zoltan Mesko, the New England Patriots punter. Click. Follow.
James Harrison? Click. Follow. Troy Polamalu? Click. Follow. His hair? Why not? Click. Follow. It’s Twitter. Anything is game.
It’s a new age. As they say, when in Cyberspace ...
Now, what will my first tweet be?
Mike Kilroy is a staff writer for the Butler Eagle. You can follow him on Twitter @KilroyWasHere7.
