Steelers weighing options for week
With the 31st pick in the NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select ...
Your guess is as good as mine, but it seems the two major areas of need are at cornerback and offensive line.
That’s the easy part. The cornerback position, where Ike Taylor and William Gay roam, is in need of a makeover.
Taylor, the team’s top corner, is a free agent unless he chooses to re-sign with the Steelers.
As of last evening, a judge had ruled on the side of the players, which gives them an upper hand, but the league is appealing. Still, no collective bargaining agreement is in place.
Gay has been inconsistent at best and it was apparent the cornerback’s play in the Super Bowl loss to Green Bay last February left a lot to be desired as quarterback Aaron Rodgers passed at will.
Patrick Peterson of LSU will be long gone by the 31st pick, but it looks as though Brandon Harris of Miami (Fla.) and Aaron Williams of Texas will be there for the taking and the Steelers will most likely have their choice.
A shutdown corner would be ideal for the Steelers although they can only play one side of the field. Want to avoid a shutdown corner? Don’t throw that way.
Still, a shutdown corner shortens the playing field and gives a defense a smaller area to work with.
The other option is on the offensive line, where offensive line coach Sean Kugler was a miracle worker with the patchwork line he had to work with protecting Ben Roethlisberger and opening holes for Rashard Mendenhall in 2010.
Injuries to Willie Colon and Max Starks knocked them out early in the season.
The team’s top pick last year, Florida center Maurkice Pouncey, was a beast at center and anchored the entire line.
An injury in the AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets meant Pouncey missed the Super Bowl against the Packers, but Doug Legursky filled in and showed the Steelers still had some depth.
Still, with Flozell Adams getting older, there’s not a lot of star power left on the line and the team will need not just one, but possibly two potential starters in this year’s draft.
Pouncey’s brother, Mike, looks to be another star in the making, coming out of Florida, but he will not make it all the way down to pick No. 31.
If — and this is a big if — the Steelers want to trade up, they’ll go after Mike. Two blocks of granite on the offensive line for the next 10 years sounds really good. Both players are better than advertised.
They could also choose to trade down and land either Harris or Williams early in the second round if they feel at least one will still be there.
The Steelers will need to land a sure starter with that first round pick, not usually the Steelers’ way, but it’s one they’ll have to use if they want to reach the Super Bowl again next season.
