PITTSBURGH — Seneca Valley juniors Alex Karika and Cate Seman are members of the Pittsburgh 3-Rivers 17 Fort Duquesne team that has qualified for the Girls Junior National Championships.

The event takes place June 29 to July 2 in Atlanta. The 3-Rivers team won the Keystone Region Volleyball Association Open Bid Tournament last weekend in Downingtown.

Butler County Community College athletic director and volleyball coach Rob Snyder coaches the 3-Rivers team.

MORAINE — The second annual Sam Bucci Memorial Fishing Derby took place Sunday at Moraine State Park and raised more than $2,000 for the memorial scholarship fund to be awarded to a Seneca Valley baseball player.There were 61 people registered for the fishing event. Zach Spangler had the grand prize bass at 2.7 pounds. Bruce Waldenmyer caught an 8.3-pound catfish to win the catfish prize and Tim Cox won the walleye prize with a 3.1-pound walleye.The Seneca Valley senior receiving the scholarship will be announced at the Raider Baseball Banquet May 1.

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants have raised nearly $70,000 to help the longtime fan who was attacked earlier this season outside Dodger Stadium.The Giants announced the total Tuesday. The money will go toward the medical costs and other expenses for Bryan Stow. The 42-year-old paramedic remains in a medically induced coma.

DALLAS — The Dallas Stars fired coach Marc Crawford after missing the playoffs in each of his two seasons, extending their postseason drought to three years.
