Police officer fatally shot in northeast Arkansas
TRUMANN, Ark. — A police officer has been shot and killed during a traffic stop in northeast Arkansas.
Trumann Police Chief Tony Rusher said that 30-year-old officer Jonathan Schmidt was killed in the shooting about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in Poinsett County, about 130 miles northeast of Little Rock.
Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler says the state police sent agents to Trumann at Rusher’s request to investigate the shooting.
Rusher says Schmidt and another officer stopped a vehicle and were walking toward it when Schmidt was shot.
The chief says a shooting suspect is in custody.
Schmidt joined the police force in 2007.
