CORAOPOLIS — A Pittsburgh-area Catholic grade school that staved off closure when families and others raised $328,000 to keep it afloat will close in June.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh says St. Joseph Catholic School in Coraopolis is suffering from declining enrollment and a projected $250,000 budget deficit.

The school has only 89 students enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade, and only 70 projected to attend next year.

The school had survived largely due to $2.6 million in donations from the Maronda Foundation over the last decade, covering about 45 percent of the school’s costs. The foundation is the charitable arm of Maronda Homes, an area developer, whose founder died three years ago. That and a suffering housing market caused the charity donations to dry up.
