Think Spring Annual
PITTSBURGH — Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens’ Spring Flower Show debuts this weekend, using colorful blooms such as tulips and daffodils to entice guests to experience vibrant and inspirational seasonal gardens.
The show, opening Saturday, ushers in the sights and smells of spring and celebrates wind with kites, sailboats and mobiles.
Seven indoor garden spaces feature tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, Easter lilies, caladiums, hydrangeas and other spring favorites.
In the Palm Court, a bronze statue of Mercury, god of wind, presides over hundreds of blooms.
The Serpentine Room includes a rustic windmill situated in a meadow scene, and in the South Conservatory, a 15-foot-tall kinetic sculpture by local artist Steve Tolin stays in constant motion.
Additional wind elements include a hanging mobile, sailboats floating in the Victoria Room pond and kites shaped like butterflies.
A members-only party is planned for after hours Saturday. The 6 to 9 p.m. opening night event features a performance by the Pittsburgh Woodwinds Quintet, light Mediterranean snacks, a cash bar, and more live music. For reservations, call 412-441-4442, Ext. 2966.
Phipps is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 10 p.m. Fridays. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors age 62 and older and students with valid ID, $9 for children ages 2 to 18 and free for children younger than 2.
