MIAMI — Firefighters extinguished a fire early today that broke out in an area where fuel is kept at the Miami International Airport.

The fire was reported about 11 p.m. Wednesday and was brought under control about 1 a.m. today, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Eric Baum said. There were no injuries, he said.

“It was a potentially disastrous fire,” Baum said.

Inspectors and technicians early today were trying to determine what caused the fire and where it began. Baum said he did not know how many fuel tanks were involved in the fire.

The fire wasn’t near any runways or terminals at the airport. Only one flight was delayed for about 45 minutes because of the fire, which happened at a time when there are few flights, airport spokesman Greg Chin said.

Later in the morning, authorities also responded to a suspicious package that was found at the airport in Terminal J.
