PITTSBURGH — A teen breakup has apparently led to a sexting investigation involving two students at a Western Pennsylvania high school.

A male and a female student at Hempfield Area High School in Westmoreland County were being investigated Monday for their possible roles in cell phone videos of each other that were sent to other students after they broke up.

“There were videos and they were sharing those videos back and forth of each other of a sexual nature,” Trooper Steven Limani, a spokesman for the state police barracks in Greensburg, said Monday.

Limani would not say if the videos showed the students engaged in sexual activity together, or whether the students shared with one another nude or otherwise sexually-related images of each other or themselves. But the trooper said students need to understand that even doing that is a crime — if the participants are minors — and that the situation is even more serious when those videos wind up being shared with other minors.

“Obviously, now these kids have the potential of looking at felony charges,” Limani said, including sexual abuse of children using the Internet. “Just because it’s you sending (an image of yourself) out, doesn’t mean you’re not guilty of a crime.”
