NEVILLE ISLAND — Three Butler County figure skaters fared well at the annual Shamrock Skate Saturday.
Danielle DePolo, 11, won silver medals in Level 3 freestyle and couples skating while placing fifth in ice spotlight.
Christian DePolo, 7, won the gold medal in pre-alpha level ice spotlight and teamed with Stefani Hartman, 6, to win the silver medal in pre-alpha level couples skating. Hartman was fourth in pre-alpha level freestyle.
All three attend Center Township Elementary School and are coached by Marty Culbertson.
CINCINNATI — Senior guard Jence Rhoads concluded her career at Vanderbilt University with an 81-62 loss to Louisville in the first round of the NCAA women's basketball tournament Sunday.Rhoads, a graduate of Slippery Rock High, finished with six points, six assists and four rebounds.The Commodores, who fell behind 41-26 at halftime, ended the season with a 20-12 record.
MINNEAPOLIS — The NFL asked a federal judge Monday to keep its lockout in place, saying there are no legal grounds to stop it while accusing the players of trying to manipulate the law with a bogus antitrust lawsuit.The NFL filed its arguments in federal court in St. Paul, Minn., where U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson has scheduled an April 6 hearing on the players' bid to stop the lockout.The NFL said any decision on a lockout should wait until the National Labor Relations Board rules on an unfair labor practice charge against the now-dissolved players' union.
ROME — Figure skating's governing body hopes to select a new site for its world championships by the end of the week because Japan is unable to be this year's host.The championships were to have begun Monday in Tokyo but had been postponed because of the earthquake and tsunami.The International Skating Union had offered Japan the possibility of hosting the worlds in October. But the Japan Skating Federation handed the competition back to the ISU over the weekend.<B></B>
