Pirates manager Clint Hurdle hits ground balls to infielders before Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees in Tampa, Fla.

TAMPA, Fla. — New York reliever Rafael Soriano made his first spring training appearance, allowing one hit in a scoreless fifth inning of the Yankees' 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night.

The primary eighth-inning setup for closer Mariano Rivera, Soriano was touched for a two-out single by Andrew McCutchen. He struck out one during a 14-pitch outing that included 13 strikes.

Russell Martin had a first-inning homer, while Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano hit RBI singles in the third for the Yankees.

Pittsburgh starter Kevin Correia allowed three runs and six hits in four innings. He has given up seven runs over 8Z\c innings in three starts.

LOCK HAVEN — Slippery Rock University basketball seniors Maron Brown and Jabril Bailey are repeat selections as first- and second team All-PSAC West players, respectively.Brown averages 18 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He leads The Rock in scoring, rebounding and steals with 32. He recorded a school-record 19 double-doubles this year.Bailey is averaging 15.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He has 30 steals.Brown has 1,304 points and 856 rebounds in three years at SRU. Bailey has 866 points and 382 rebounds in two seasons.

JACKSON TWP — Four Seneca Valley inline hockey teams will play for league championships this weekend at Harmarville BladeRunners.The Tier 1 junior varsity plays Shaler in Game 3 of a best-of-three series at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Tier 3 middle school, Tier 1 and Tier 3 elementary teams will play the second and third games of best-of-three series Saturday and Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Baylor freshman Perry Jones was declared ineligible by the NCAA Wednesday after an investigation about whether Jones or his family received preferential treatment or improper benefits from an AAU coach before enrolling in college.The NCAA’s decision came only hours before the Bears lost 84-67 to Oklahoma in the first round of the Big 12 Conference tournament.Baylor played without the 6-foot-11 Jones, a starter and one of the nation’s top freshmen averaging 13.9 points and 7.2 rebounds.Baylor immediately appealed to have Jones’ eligibility reinstated.
