Although most counties in Western Pennsylvania lost residents, Butler County’s population increased.

Its population increased to 183,862 in 2010 from 174,083 in 2000, a jump of 5.6 percent, according to 2010 U.S. Census data released Wednesday.

The increase moved Butler County from 20th to 19th on the state’s list of most populous counties.

Here is the list of 2010 populations in Western Pennsylvania counties, their respective changes and current ranks in population.

• Butler — 183,862; +5.6 percent; 19th

• Armstrong — 68,941; -4.8 percent; 38th

• Beaver — 170,539; -6 percent; 20th

• Clarion — 39,988; -4.3 percent; 55th

• Lawrence — 91,908; -3.7 percent; 33rd

• Mercer — 116,638; -3 percent; 29th

• Venango — 54,984; -4.5 percent; 43rd

Pennsylvania’s overall population has increased by 421,325 people since 2000 to total 12.7 million, an increase of 3.4 percent.
