PITTSBURGH — Two cardiologists at a Western Pennsylvania hospital implanted coronary stents in at least 141 patients who might not have needed them last year, a Pittsburgh newspaper reported.

According to the report, medical reviews at Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg show the patients might not have had enough blockage in their arteries to need a stent. None of the identified patients is believed to have suffered any harm.

Hospital officials identified the two doctors as Ehab Morcos, 48, and George Bousamra, 45, who voluntarily resigned their privileges at the hospital in January.

STATE COLLEGE — The 814 area code in northwestern and central Pennsylvania might not be running out of phone numbers as quickly as initially thought.The firm that administers area code allocations told the state Public Utility Commission it might be 2015 when the 814 area code is out of numbers, instead of 2013. Regulators say a new policy to better conserve numbers might be a factor for the latest estimate.

PITTSBURGH — City police officers say they will work off-duty security details during the St. Patrick’s Day celebration.The officers’ union had mulled refusing to work such jobs during the parade as a protest over their claims of mistreatment by the city.Union President Dan O’Hara says some officers will march in the March 12 parade and hand out leaflets about issues the union wants the city to address.
