OAKLAND TWP — A trash pile fire that started just after midnight off Bonniebrook Road was still smoldering late this morning.

The smoke from the fire had a foul smell, but was not deemed a health hazard.

Ed Edgington, fire police captain with Oakland Township Volunteer Fire Department, said, “You’re breathing in smoke from burnt tar.”

Scott Hoffman with Butler County Emergency Services Hazmat said an air quality test showed nothing hazardous. He said a state Department of Environmental Protection crew would arrive later to do additional tests.

The property owner, Gary Neff, looked out his back window about midnight and saw the pile smoldering and glowing red and called 911.

Part of what makes up the trash pile was roofing shingles used by his business, G.L. Neff Construction Co.

There were no injuries.

Don McCoy with the Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department said the wind mostly blew away from the position the firefighters were in, so they mostly avoided breathing in fumes from the shingles.

McCoy said there is no official cause to the fire.
