LOS ANGELES — A Super Bowl MVP, a boxing great and a grown-up “Karate Kid” will be hoofing it on the 12th season of “Dancing with the Stars.”Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward, former welterweight champ Sugar Ray Leonard and Ralph Macchio of the hit 1984 karate movie will be among 11 celebrity contestants when the ABC show returns March 21.The cast was announced Monday in segments that aired during an episode of ABC's “The Bachelor.”Also hitting the dance floor will be Kirstie Alley; model Petra Nemcova, who survived an Indian Ocean tsunami; professional wrestler Chris Jericho; “Loveline” radio show co-host Mike Catherwood; one-time rap prodigy Romeo (former Lil' Romeo); Chelsea Kane of Disney Channel's “Jonas”; talk show host Wendy Williams and reality star Kendra Wilkinson.

BUTLER TWP — Modified driver Don Brown of Butler finished second to West Newton's Billy Stile III in the balloting for the Western Pennsylvania Rookie Race Driver of the Year Award.Nearly 70 media members and track officials voted on the award, which was started in 1968. Past winners include Dave and Dale Blaney, Ed Lynch Jr., Bob Felmlee, Kevin Bolland, Dave Murdick and Jared Miley.

WHEELING, W.Va. — Seneca Valley graduate Tyler Mesisca recorded two goals and an assist as Slippery Rock University defeated Pitt, 6-4, in the ACHA College Division Tournament over the weekend.Josh Herbert scored a hat trick in SRU's 8-2 win over Duquesne as the top-seeded Rock won the regional tourney.

PENN HILLS — Butler Cubs boxer Robert Osterider (2-0) won a unanimous decision over Randall Gaertner of Boyce Athletic Club in a Golden Gloves Tournament match Saturday.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett has mild concussion symptoms, according to the team, after he was hit in the back of the head during batting practice before Boston's exhibition game against the Minnesota Twins Monday.Beckett walked from the field on his own, with trainers at his side. But after being examined by a doctor, he was sent home to rest. The Red Sox expect an update on Beckett Tuesday.Beckett was in the outfield when coaching staff assistant Ino Guerrero attempted to use a fungo bat to return a ball to the infield. Instead, the ball hit Beckett.Beckett is coming off a disappointing, injury-riddled 6-6 season, in which he had a 5.78 ERA.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Harvey Dorfman, a pioneering sports psychologist known for his work with baseball players, has died. He was 75.Dorfman died Monday at his home, according to agent Scott Boras, whose company employed Dorfman for the past decade.Dorfman was hired by the Oakland Athletics in 1984 when farm director Karl Kuehl concluded young players needed help dealing with the mental pressure of adjusting to professional baseball.After helping the A's reach three straight World Series, including a championship in 1989, Kuehl moved to the Florida Marlins in 1994. During his time in Florida, he helped the Marlins win the World Series.Among the players who have credited Dorfman with assisting them are two-time Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay and pitcher-turned-outfielder Rick Ankiel.

WASHINGTON — Clinton Portis was released by the Washington Redskins.The Redskins cut ties with Portis on Monday, ending his seven seasons in the nation's capital.Portis is coming off back-to-back seasons cut short by injuries and was scheduled to $8.3 million next season.Portis told 106.7 The Fan that he was given the chance to restructure his deal, but he felt it was better if he moved on.
