OAKLAND TWP — Dozens of firefighters from several departments continue to battle a stubborn dump fire. They stated early this morning.

The fire was reported shortly after midnight at a home and roofing business on Beblo Lane near Bonniebrook Road.

By 9 a.m., at least a half dozen fire departments still were there. Several tankers and an excavator also were called to help battle the blaze.

Residents living on the road and nearby complained of a foul smell coming from the fire when they woke up and went to work after 5:30 a.m.

At least one neighbor reported a similar smell coming from the dump about 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters said among the rubbish on fire were shingles and other construction materials. An excavator was used to dig up some of the buried waste that apparently caught fire.

“The smell everyone is complaining about,” one firefighter said, “is burned tar.”

Fire departments on duty this morning were from Oakland Township-Oneida Valley, Lick Hill, East Butler, Herman, Chicora, Saxonburg and Petrolia.
