The Moniteau and Union boys and girls basketball teams highlight District 9 playoff action this week.

Moniteau's boys face Smethport at 6 p.m. today at Clarion High while the Warriors girls play Brookville at 6 p.m. Friday at the same site.

Union High will host a girls-boys District 9 Class A basketball playoff doubleheader Friday.

The Damsels will host Port Allegany at 6 p.m., followed by the Golden Knights hosting Johnsonburg at 7:30.

PITTSBURGH — Linebacker LaMarr Woodley signed Pittsburgh's one-year franchise tender offer, the Steelers announced Wednesday.In the final season of his rookie contract, Woodley, 26, made $550,000. But next season, he'll stand to make more than $10 million because of the tag and his position. The Steelers also could sign him to a long-term contract.Woodley, a former second-round pick out of Michigan, had 50 tackles, 10 sacks and two interceptions last season, helping the Steelers to the AFC championship in just his fourth season.He has 39 sacks and seven forced fumbles for his career.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional this week, marking SRU's first appearance in the top 10 this season.The top eight ranked teams at the end of the season earn Division II tournament berths.SRU (18-8) is third in the PSAC West and will play at Indiana (Pa.) or Mercyhurst in a first-round PSAC Tournament game Tuesday.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Former Slippery Rock University women's basketball standout Kathy Lisman Wood will have her jersey retired Saturday at halftime of the Edinboro-SRU women's game.A Mars graduate, Wood is SRU's all-time career steals leader with 311 and owns the single season record of 108, set in 1979-80. She also is second on The Rock's all-time list with 422 assists.Wood is in the Mars Athletic Hall of Fame, SRU Athletic Hall of Fame and Butler County Sports Hall of Fame.

ERIE — The coach of Pennsylvania’s two-time defending Class AA girls basketball team resigned after school officials learned his estranged wife and ex-wife had obtained protection-from-abuse orders against him.Scott Dibble told the Erie Times-News he was “shocked” by being forced to resign Tuesday as coach at Villa Maria Academy, where he has 267 wins and 55 losses since 2000. But Dibble said he doesn’t want to distract his team, which begins the District 10 playoffs Saturday.School officials said Dibble’s current wife, a teacher at the school, got a protection from abuse order against him in November. School officials learned his ex-wife had obtained a similar order in 2003 when the newspaper reported that last week.The school’s president said Dibble’s employment wasn’t “consistent with the mission and values of the school.”
