BAMAKO, Mali — Anguished families wept at hospitals and morgues today after 36 people were crushed and at least 64 others were injured in a stampede as a crowd tried to leave a stadium following a religious ceremony.

Tens of thousands had gathered to receive blessings from one of Mali's best known imams, Osman Madani Haidara, during the Muslim holy period of Maouloud. Witnesses say the stadium in this West African nation had been holding many more than its maximum capacity.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Lighting up a cigarette at home could bring a visit from Honduran police if a family member or even a visitor complains about secondhand smoke.A new law that took effect Monday banning smoking in most public and private spaces doesn't actually outlaw cigarettes inside homes, but it does have a provision allowing people to file complaints about secondhand smoke in homes.Violations would bring a verbal warning on the first offense. After that could come arrest and a $311 fine — the equivalent of the monthly minimum wage.

MANAMA, Bahrain — Bahrain’s king ordered the release of some political prisoners today, conceding to another opposition demand as the embattled monarchy tries to engage protesters in talks aimed at ending an uprising that has entered its second week.The king’s decree — which covers several Shiite activists accused of plotting against the state — adds to the brinksmanship on both sides that has included a massive pro-government rally Monday and the planned returned of a prominent opposition figure from exile.It’s unclear how many prisoners will be freed, said government spokeswoman Maysoon Sabkar.
