District 9 and 10 have announced their basketball playoff brackets, which are set to begin this week.
In District 9:
n The Union girls are the No. 2 seed in District 9 Class A and have received a first-round bye. The squad will host the winner of Tuesday's Port Allegany-Cameron County winner at a date and time to be determined.
n In Class AA girls, No. 3 seed Moniteau will face No. 2 Brookville Friday at Clarion High School at a time to be determined.
n In Class AA boys, Moniteau, the No. 3 seed, will play at No. 2 Smethport at 6 p.m. Thursday at Clarion University.
n In Class A boys, No. 4 seed Union will host No. 13 Clarion and No. 15 A-C Valley will play at No. 2 Ridgway, both contests with 7 p.m. Wednesday tip-offs.
In District 10:
n The Grove City girls squad will face Mercyhurst Prep in Class AAA play at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at General McLane High School.
Also, Slippery Rock University's Morrow Field House will host a boys Class AAA doubleheader Thursday.
Franklin will square off against Central Tech at 6:30 p.m., followed by Sharon vs. Girard at 8 p.m.
ERIE — Will Nesbitt of Center Township captured the boys (age 18) Sectional Tennis Championship at the Pennbriar Athletic Club this weekend.Ranked as the No. 1 seed, Nesbitt received a first-round bye, then won by default over Ross Molinaro.In the semifinals, he dispatched Zach McCafferty of Butler 6-2, 6-3, then Nick Ward of Erie 7-5, 6-2 in the finals.
JACKSON TWP — Three Seneca Valley sophomores — Wendell Frank, Cole Fyock and Dan Peterson — have been named 2011 High School Underclassmen All-Americans and selected to represent the Ohio Region in the National Lacrosse Classic, which will be held July 5-8 in Germantown, Md.The Classic brings in the top 500 high school underclassmen, where 20 regional teams will compete for USA Champions and earn the chance to compete for the International Championship against Canada.
GROVE CITY — The Grove City College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have captured the Presidents’ Athletic Conference titles this past weekend.The women’s squad accumulated 888 points to cruise to the championship over runner-up Washington & Jefferson College, who finished with 652 points, a 236-point difference.In the men’s finals, the Wolverines finished first with 948 points, easily outdistancing second-place Westminster by 294 points.
WASHINGTON — Federally mediated negotiations toward a new NFL labor deal lasted about eight hours, the third consecutive day the sides met to try to find common ground before the current contract expires.After months of infrequent — and sometimes contentious — bargaining, the league and union have met for a total of more than 20 hours since Friday in front of George Cohen, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith arrived within minutes of each other, shortly before 10 a.m., and the two negotiating teams didn't clear out of the building entirely until after 6 p.m.Goodell and Smith wouldn't discuss the talks at all. It's not clear what, if any, progress is being made.
LOS ANGELES — Aaron Baddeley won the Northern Trust Open for his first PGA Tour victory in four years.In a battle of two generations, the 29-year-old Baddeley didn't make a mistake over the last six holes at Riviera to hold off Vijay Singh and 51-year-old Fred Couples, who was trying to become the oldest PGA Tour winner in more than 35 years.Baddeley closed with a 2-under 69 for a two-shot victory over Singh, who turns 48 on Tuesday.Couples birdied the opening three holes for a one-shot lead that revved up Riviera, but it all changed on the seventh hole — a birdie by Baddeley from the fringe, a double bogey for Couples.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Andy Roddick won the 30th title of his career in his 50th final, finishing off a thrilling 7-6 (7), 6-7 (11), 7-5 victory over Canadian Milos Raonic in the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.Roddick polished off the 2-hour, 36-minute match by diving to put his racket on the ball for a winner down the line that broke the 20-year-old Raonic for the victory.
