Tom Mahovsky won the Butler County Symphony Association's 32nd Young Artist Competition. He will perform with the symphony at its March 12 concert.

Tom Mahovsky, a junior at Slippery Rock University, won the Butler County Symphony Association's 32nd Young Artist Competition Jan. 23 at Swope Hall at SRU.

Mahovsky is the son of Barry and Diane Vickers of Conneaut Lake.

As the competition winner, he will perform on his euphonium, a brass instrument, with the Butler County Symphony Orchestra in a concert March 12 at the Butler Intermediate High School auditorium.

Mahovsky is a music education and euphonium performance major at SRU. He is the principal euphonium player in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Brass Ensemble, section captain of the Marching Pride, and has participated in many of the university's performing ensembles including: concert band, orchestra, tuba/euphonium ensemble, quartets, trios, trombone choir, jazz band, jazz combo, choir and chamber singers.

In 2009, he was the principal euphonium player in the Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band. He is also the first call baritone/euphonium substitute for River City Brass in Pittsburgh and has played with the group in Western Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

In his solo experiences, he has performed two one-hour recitals and has tied for runner-up in the annual concerto competition at Slippery Rock University.

He has participated in a recital at the International Euphonium Institute and has played solos at various churches.

He performs in the Lakeland Tuba Quartet, community bands, cantatas, musicals, and in church ensembles.

He plans to work in Virginia this summer as a euphonium performer at Busch Gardens amusement park. Upon completion of his undergraduate studies, he plans to attend graduate school for euphonium performance. After school, his ambition is to be a member in a military band and eventually teach at the collegiate level.

Tickets for the March 12 concerts are $15 in advance for adults or $18 at the door. Student tickets are $5.
