Dukes bow to Xavier
PITTSBURGH — Tu Holloway wouldn’t allow Duquesne to wrestle Atlantic 10 superiority away from the team that’s dominated the conference for the past half-decade.
Holloway had 15 of his game-high 20 points in the final 11:02 of the game, bringing the Musketeers back from a six-point deficit as Xavier beat Duquesne 71-63 on Sunday in a game with first place in the A-10 on the line.
“I think he just took control and (said to himself), ‘It was my turn to score’ and he was scoring at will every single time,” Duquesne senior forward Bill Clark said.
Trailing 49-43 after a Duquesne 8-2 run gave the Dukes their biggest lead of the game, Holloway hit a 3-pointer to start a stretch in which he scored 15 of the next 26 Xavier points as the Musketeers (18-6, 9-1) won for the 10th time in 11 games.
Xavier put itself in control of its own destiny to win their fifth consecutive regular-season Atlantic 10 Championship.
B.J. Monteiro had 17 points for Duquesne (16-7, 8-2), which has lost two consecutive games after a school-record 8-0 start in conference play.
Dante Jackson tied a career-high with 19 points and Kenny Frease added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Musketeers.
