IN BRIEF
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR's competition applications for 2011 require drivers to select which series they will race for a championship in this season.
The declaration will prevent Sprint Cup drivers from racing for championships in both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, and presumably fill NASCAR's desire to give its second-tier series its own identity.
NASCAR has declined to discuss the policy change because officials plan to make all their competition announcements over the next few weeks.
The requirement to choose just one series first was reported by NASCAR.com.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — The lead Minnesota Vikings official pushing for a new, publicly financed stadium said the team will pay about a third of what it would cost to build a stadium without a roof — even if state lawmakers opt for a more expensive covered facility.Lester Bagley told The Associated Press Wednesday that the Vikings don't need a roof, but understand an outdoor stadium might not get legislative approval when lawmakers take up the debate again in February. An outdoor stadium has been estimated to cost at least $700 million, with a permanent or retractable roof likely to add another few hundred million to the total cost.
