Another 5 inches of snow today could be added to the 5 inches or so that fell Tuesday into today, according to forecasts.

“Two to 5 inches, that’s the potential accumulation through tonight,” said Charlie Woodrum, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.

The predicted snowfall is included in a winter weather advisory that remains in effect until midnight tonight.

Winds from the northwest are to pick up during the day with gusts up to 25 mph by late afternoon.

“This could produce blowing snow that may cause problems for drivers,” Woodrum said.

The complex snow storm is the product of a series of low pressure systems, he said. The first one blew in across the Ohio Valley with a burst of snow Tuesday afternoon.

That system merged with another one that has been moving up the Atlantic Coast, and bringing more snow.

The third system that will work its way through today is carrying a cool moist northwest wind flow over Lake Erie

The snow caused school districts in the county to initially delay classes. But then some districts canceled school for the day.

A break from the mess is expected Thursday with little or no accumulation predicted.

Not much snowfall is forecast for the weekend. However, Woodrum warned of a possible clipper system that could bring a quick burst of accumulation — from 2 to 4 inches.
