2nd gas leak near blast prompts wider evacuation
WAYNE, Mich. — A new gas leak in the area of a store explosion in southeastern Michigan has prompted the evacuation of a wider area and the Wayne City Hall.
Consumers Energy spokeswoman Debra Dodd said the utility ordered an expanded evacuation this afternoon after finding the second gas leak in the Detroit suburb.
The area covers about a block near the area previously evacuated around Franks Furniture, which exploded this morning.
Dodd says city officials decided to evacuate the nearby municipal offices as a precaution, though the site is outside the utility’s evacuation zone. She says crews expected to have the second gas main shut down by late afternoon.
The blast critically injured the store’s owner, and rescue crews are searching for two missing store employees.
