Authorities say drugs being held as evidence by Pittsburgh police were prematurely destroyed, leading to charges being dropped in one case and potentially affecting a federal prosecution.

A Pittsburgh newspaper reports that about 14,000 bags of heroin worth $107,000 were destroyed after county prosecutors opted not to pursue state charges. But that's because federal prosecutors had taken up the case.

The Allegheny County District Attorney's office says it will not charge two police officers in the shooting death of a man in 2009.District Attorney Stephen Zappala's office said it has informed the family of Nicholas Haniotakis that it will not pursue charges against state police Trooper Sam Nassan and Pittsburgh Police Sgt. Terry Donnelly. Zappala's office would not comment further.Nassan and Donnelly have said they shot at the 33-year-old in March 2009 after the officers alleged he tried to run them over with his car. An autopsy showed a bullet fired by Nassan killed Haniotakis.In April 2009, Haniotakis' family filed a federal lawsuit against the police officers alleging wrongful death. The case is pending.
