Afghan review expected to back July drawdown

WASHINGTON — The White House says a yearlong review of the Afghanistan war will show that the U.S. can begin withdrawing troops in July.

President Barack Obama and his top national security officials met for nearly two hours today to review the report. The president will speak about the findings Thursday.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says the report focuses on three components: Al-Qaida’s senior leadership, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. He says the report shows progress in halting the momentum of the Taliban and increasing cooperation with the Pakistani government.

Gibbs says there are still areas of concern, including strengthening the capacity of the Afghan government and ending extremist safe havens in Pakistan.
