HARRISBURG — The state will pay about $2.2 million to give thousands of Pennsylvania government workers the day off when Tom Corbett is inaugurated.

The Patriot-News of Harrisburg reported that the decision was made by Gov. Ed Rendell's administration and follows a precedent that's believed to go back several decades.

Corbett is scheduled to be sworn in on Jan. 18. Not all state workers qualify for the extra day off.

CANONSBURG — Some residents and businesses are planning a celebration in response to a complaint about a Nativity scene at the borough building. The organizers say it's not a protest event. However, Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce official Terry Hazlett said it's a way to show that you can still have the Christmas spirit despite what happened.The borough did not put up the scene on borough property for the first time in 57 years after a resident complained. It was instead placed nearby by a private group.
