PITTSBURGH — The Pirates and outfielder Matt Diaz reached a preliminary agreement on a $4.25 million, two-year contract, according to a person familiar with the deal.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday night because the deal is pending a physical and no announcement had been made.

The Pirates likely will platoon Diaz in right field with Garrett Jones. The 32-year-old Diaz hit .273 with seven homers and 31 RBI in 84 games for Atlanta last season, when his salary was $2.55 million.

The season before, he batted .313 with 13 homers and 58 RBI and had a .390 on-base percentage in 425 at-bats.

Diaz, a right-handed hitter, became a free agent after the Braves didn’t tender him a contract. He played left field with Atlanta, but Jose Tabata plays there for Pittsburgh. The deal makes it likely the Pirates will trade catcher-outfielder Ryan Doumit, who is owed $5.1 million next season.

Diaz can earn another $250,000 in performance bonuses: $125,000 each season.

Earlier this week, the Pirates reached an agreement with right-hander Kevin Correia on an $8 million, two-year contract, pending a physical.

The 30-year-old Correia was 10-10 with a 5.40 ERA in 26 starts for San Diego last season. He has a 36-43 record and 4.57 ERA in eight seasons, going 12-11 in 2009.

The Pirates had the majors’ worst starting pitching while finishing 57-105 in 2010. Their starters’ 5.28 ERA was easily the NL’s worst, with Milwaukee ranking second to last at 4.65.

Correia made $3.6 million last season. He gets a $2 million signing bonus from the Pirates, annual salaries of $3 million and the chance to earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses in 2012.

Pittsburgh also has a one-year deal with left-hander Scott Olsen, who also must pass a physical. Olsen was 6-12 over the last two seasons for Washington, which removed him from its 40-man roster on Nov. 5.
