Bloomin' Holiday Winter flower show under way at Phipps

Which way to the winter flower show? The annual conservatory display plus a garden railroad are available for viewing at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden.

PITTSBURGH — Nine indoor gardens have been transformed to tell the tale of holidays past, present and future in the winter flower show continuing through Jan. 9 at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.

Featured are topiary snowmen made of white Alyssum, hanging baskets, evergreens lit with tens of thousands of LED lights, three G scale trains and close to 2,000 poinsettias.

Also featured is the garden railroad, complete with operating trains chugging through miniature living scenery, including dwarf conifers, groundcovers, sedums and small-growing plants to reflect a larger-scale natural landscape. The garden railroad will be on display through March 13.

Additional holiday events include:

• Santa visits: Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 19, a festive photo opportunity for kids to visit with Santa and decorate cookies.

• Candlelight evenings: During December, Phipps stays open until 10 p.m. daily with candlelit walkways and live entertainment.

• Family fun days: During the holiday break for schools from Dec. 26 to 30, there will be educational activities including learning stations and crafts.

• New Year’s Eve: On Dec. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m., ring in the New Year with the whole family at a celebration beginning at 8:45 p.m. and featuring an countdown.

The historic glass house in Schenley Park is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays until 10 p.m., plus extra hours for candlelight evenings until 10 p.m. daily through Dec. 31.
