Fire destroys 2 homes in Freeport

FREEPORT — A fire at a vacant house in the 600 block of Market Street early this morning spread to two other two-story homes.

No one was injured in the fire that a Kittanning state police fire marshal will investigate.

Lt. Jeff Lowers of the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department said this morning the blaze quickly spread from the vacant house to an adjacent home occupied by a family.

“The first one was fully engulfed,” Lowers said. “There was no way having an interior attack. It was tough.”

The exact addresses and names of occupants were not available.

After responding to the 1:41 a.m. 911 call, firefighters found the second home already was ablaze.

“The flames were rolling onto the street,” Lowers said. “I could see it five blocks down.”

Lowers said both the vacant house and the second house are total losses.

He said the damage to the third house was limited to one second-floor room and part of the exterior.
