KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Three Slippery Rock University women's soccer players were named to the All-Atlantic Region team.

Midfield Alison Hindley earned first-team honors, scoring 34 goals and 10 assists in her SRU career. Defender Emer Flatley and forward Danielle Turner made the second team.

SRU finished the season ranked No. 22 in Division II with a 14-3-5 record.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Slippery Rock University men's soccer senior Tom Pool was named a Daktronics All-America honorable mention as a defender.Pool played in only 13 games this season due to injury.

NEW YORK — Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees have made “significant or substantial progress” on a new contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Friday.New York also moved close to an agreement with closer Mariano Rivera on a two-year contract for about $30 million. The sides worked on final details Friday and were likely to be in position to announce a finalized deal within a few days.The Yankees believe Rivera had received offers from the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels and possibly the Los Angeles Dodgers, the person said.

NEW YORK — Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez pleaded guilty Friday to attempted assault to settle charges he attacked his girlfriend's father at Citi Field last season in a deal that spares him jail time but sends him to additional anger management classes.The 28-year-old reliever had been charged with assault after he was accused of grabbing Carlos Pena, hauling him into a tunnel near the family lounge beneath the team's ballpark and punching him in the face after an Aug. 11 game.He tore a ligament in the thumb of his pitching hand and underwent season-ending surgery after the altercation. The fight cost Rodriguez more than $3.14 million, in addition to more than seven weeks on the sidelines.

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Padres are having serious discussions with Boston about trading All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox, a person familiar with the talks told The Associated Press on Friday night.The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because talks are ongoing, said the Padres likely would receive prospects if a deal is finalized.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets might be without their defensive quarterback for the rest of the season.Safety Jim Leonhard, who calls the defensive signals in the secondary, has a broken right leg that required surgery Friday night, hours after he was injured during a collision at practice.The team declined to speculate on Leonhard's playing status until after the surgery, but it appears likely to be a season-ending injury.

WASHINGTON — Longtime agent Gary Wichard was suspended by the NFL Players Association for nine months for his role in a recruiting scandal involving the University of North Carolina.Wichard, an agent since 1980, was suspended for his involvement with Marvin Austin, a former Tar Heels player who was dismissed from the team in October. Among his NFL clients are Dwight Freeney, Jason Taylor, Antonio Cromartie, Elvis Dumervil, Terrell Suggs and Darren Sproles.Reds add 2 years to Arroyo's pactCINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds completed a new contract with right-hander Bronson Arroyo that adds two years through 2013 and $23.5 million in new money.
