PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh transit company mechanic has been sentenced to 2½ to 5 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter, because he lied about inspecting brakes on a school van that crashed, killing a teacher's aide for special-needs students.

An Allegheny County judge on Wednesday sentenced 35-year-old Mark Fabian, who has been jailed since he was convicted in September.

Fifty-three-year-old Colleen Visconti died nine days after the crash on Sept. 3, 2009.

Fabian's attorney had blamed the crash on the van's driver, who testified that she noticed problems with the brakes, but was told they'd been fixed.

PITTSBURGH — The man who ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for governor says he’s not sure whether he’ll run for a third term as Allegheny County executive.Dan Onorato says he’s still discussing his career options with his family.Onorato was elected county executive in 2003 and re-elected in 2007. The county’s charter specifies a three-term limit for county executive.Onorato says he has a number of options, including a return to the private sector where he once worked as an accountant and attorney. Another would be running for state auditor general in 2012, as fellow Pittsburgh Democrat Jack Wagner cannot seek a third term.
