HARRISBURG — Tens of thousands of Pennsylvania government workers will soon get a little boost in their paychecks in the form of interest from the pay withheld from their paychecks during the state budget impasse of 2009.

Office of Administration spokesman Dan Egan said Monday the total amount of money is about $120,000, and it's unclear when it'll be paid to the state workers.

An arbitrator issued the award to Council 13 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees on Nov. 13. The award calls for payments of 6 percent interest.

Union head David Fillman says if workers didn't work overtime during that period they'll probably receive less than $10.

ALLENTOWN — The state health department says the death of an eastern Pennsylvania man has been confirmed as the first flu-related death of the season.Michael Huff, acting health secretary, says the 45-year-old Lehigh County man was confirmed to have the 2009 H1N1 influenza, which officials say is beginning to circulate in the commonwealth.Officials say the year's flu vaccine provides protection against that as well as two other strains of flu which “are very well matched with what is circulating in Pennsylvania.”

DUNCANNON — A preliminary hearing is scheduled Wednesday for a central Pennsylvania man charged with shooting a friend while the two were turkey hunting earlier this month.Authorities say 53-year-old Hugh McChord, of Linglestown, Dauphin County, died after being shot in the neck Nov. 13 while turkey hunting in Perry County. Investigators said his hunting partner mistook him for a turkey and fired.The Pennsylvania Game Commission says 51-year-old Kenneth Mutzabaugh of Duncannon was charged Friday with killing or injuring a human while hunting and a firearms crime. He was released on $25,000 unsecured bail by District Judge Daniel McGuire pending the Nov. 24 hearing.
