SEVEN FIELDS — Residents of the street where a Colorado young woman was shot and killed reacted today, one of them saying she still feels safe in her community.

“This could have happened anywhere. Bad choices happen everywhere,” said Debra Hollingsworth, who lives next door to the house where the shooting occurred.

Eric Rutledge, 18, of 102 Woodhaven Drive is in the Butler County Prison, charged with homicide in the shooting death of Courtney Daily, 18, of Colorado Springs, Colo., who had been visiting Rutledge Tuesday evening when Rutledge pulled the trigger on a shotgun that he had been handling and it discharged. He told police that he thought the gun was not loaded.

“I'm shocked,” she said. “My heart goes out to the girl's family, to Eric's mom and to Eric because his life has changed forever because of this. Everyone's lives have changed drastically.”

Both Daily and Rutledge were former Mesa Ridge High School students in Colorado Springs, Colo., according to a Colorado Springs newspaper report.

Daily last attended Mesa Ridge in 2008 and then attended Discovery High School, which is described as a school for nontraditional students. Both of the high schools are in the city of Colorado Springs.

A school official referred to Rutledge as “an on-again, off-again student” at Mesa Ridge, last attending during September 2008.
