ERIE — Mercyhurst College might soon be Mercyhurst University.

The college's trustees said Thursday they would ask the state Department of Education to grant them university status. Mercyhurst President Tom Gamble told an Erie newspaper that the name change would not change anything at the college but would better describe what the school has to offer.

If approved, the change could become effective sometime next year.
