ALLENTOWN — Leaders of business advocacy groups flanked Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Corbett as he promised Tuesday to slash corporate taxes and "make Pennsylvania No. 1 again," while Democratic hopeful Dan Onorato visited businesses and greeted voters in Philadelphia and northeastern Pennsylvania.

Corbett, the state attorney general and front-runner in independent polls, was joined by leaders of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, the National Federation of Independent Business and the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association at a rally that drew about 50 people to a state GOP call center at an Allentown strip mall.

In Nanticoke, Onorato greeted people lined up outside the high school where Bill Clinton was scheduled to appear at a rally to help Democratic Rep. Paul Kanjorski in his uphill re-election contest with Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta. Onorato was scheduled to introduce the congressman at the rally.

For Onorato, the elected chief executive of Allegheny County's government, it was to be his third campaign appearance with the former president. He planned to accompany Clinton to a series of campaign rallies in Erie, Lehigh and Montgomery counties on Thursday.

"I love the last week of the campaign," Onorato said as he waited for the late Clinton to arrive.

In Allentown, the business leaders touted Corbett's tax-cutting, government-shrinking agenda as the antidote for Pennsylvania's high unemployment rate and what they regard as its unfriendly business climate.

Small business owners "still believe Pennsylvania's best days lie ahead," said state director Kevin Shivers of the federation, which claims 14,000 Pennsylvania members. "But our recovery only can begin when state government breaks with the failed tax-and-spend policies" of Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell's administration.
