Rock rolls to 56-14 homecoming win

SRU's LaQuinn Howling-Stephens (32) exploits hole in Lock Haven's defen during the SRU homecoming game on Saturday.

SLIPPERY ROCK — George Mihalik said his Slippery Rock University football team was looking for a "feel good" homecoming game Saturday.

The start felt kinda lousy, actually.

"But it was exactly what we needed," Mihalik said.

Winless Lock Haven took the opening kickoff, marched down the field and scored, only to see SRU go on to post a 56-14 victory at N.Kerr Thompson Stadium.

The Bald Eagles' 74-yard drive was highlighted by a 49-yard run by quarterback Jarrett Kratzer. Lock Haven had scored only 13 points in its previous 18 quarters.

"That was a wake-up call, for sure," SRU linebacker Zach Sheridan said. "We had a missed assignment on that long run, but we fixed it.

"We played OK after that."

Lock Haven managed only one first down the rest of the half and trailed 35-7 at halftime.

After its early score, Lock Haven's offense met with disaster on its next play. Running back Brandon Brader fumbled at his own 5-yard line and Sheridan recovered. Moments later, Akeem Satterfield scored his first of three rushing touchdowns.

"That was probably the turning point of the game, that fumble," Mihalik said. "They lost their momentum right there."

Lock Haven coach John Klacik begged to disagree. He said his team's momentum was lost when the teams exchanged interceptions late in the first quarter.

"The score's tied and we get a big pick near midfield," Klacik said. "Two plays later, we give it right back to them. That was a killer for us."

Brandon Watters got the interception for The Rock (6-2, 3-2). SRU scored the game's next five touchdowns.

Satterfield rushed for 123 yards while freshman LaQuinn Stephens-Howling added 115 yards and two TDs on the ground. The Rock rushed for 324 yards and threw only 10 passes all day.

"We do take special pride when two backs go after 100 yards," right guard Mike Tomaino said. "When our backs score, they point at us, not at themselves.

"That's a special feeling."

Lock Haven (0-8, 0-6) suffered four turnovers and allowed Robert Doiley to return a punt 76 yards for a score.

"I have a lot of faith in our return team. Those guys want to get me in the end zone," Doiley said.

"When our D-line and linebackers are shutting down the run, it sets up our defensive backs to make plays. We picked off three passes, but one was ruled out of bounds."

Kratzer, the third quarterback used by Lock Haven this season, completed 15 of 30 passes for 122 yards. The first two QBs are out for the year with injuries.

"Jarrett was a wide receiver last week," Klacik said. "It's hard enough to play quarterback in this league when you're practicing the position all the time, let alone for three days.

"We only have eight full scholarships and 40 percent of that was on the sidelines with injuries. We got a few more banged up today, so that number will be at 60 percent next week."

Lock Haven lost its 29th straight game overall and 22nd straight to SRU.

Notes: SRU is 19-4 on homecoming under Mihalik. ... The Rock has clinched its 16th winning season in 19 years. ... Watters led SRU with 10 tackles. ... SRU travels to Mercyhurst for a noon kickoff Saturday.
