Ken Quast, 98, of Greenville, S.C., passed away Friday in St. Francis Hospital, Greenville.

He was born to Amelia Knechtel and William Quast on Jan. 4, 1912, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was the last member of his family of origin.

Ken was employed by Swift & Co. in Canada and Chicago, was a sales and merchandising representative for the American Lamb Council in Denver, and then was the USA East Coast representative for the New Zealand Meat Export Development Co. in Connecticut. In semi-retirement, he served as the manager of Shamrock Golf Course in Slippery Rock.

In 1986, he fully retired to Greenville, which was his home for 24 years.

Three of his immediate family members preceded him in death: his wife of 61 years, Mary Steele Quast; a son, John B.; and grandson, John B. III.

He is survived by a daughter, Lesley Ann Quast (Albert Keiser) of Greenville; a son, W. Garry Quast (Jacqueline); six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Playing bridge and poker, golfing, singing in church choir, reading history and doing crossword puzzles were Ken's favorite activities.

He was known for his quick wit as well as his devout faith. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir, served on the vestry and mission council as well as served as assistant treasurer and faithful member of the Disciples group.

Ken volunteered with United Ministries and Greenville Literacy until six years ago.

<B>QUAST </B>— The ashes of Ken Quast, who died Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, will be interred alongside those of his wife in the Memorial Garden of St. James Church.
