PITTSBURGH — A Cranberry Township couple turned themselves into authorities here Friday as they were charged with allegedly transferring cash out of a million dollar trust for two orphans entrusted to their care.

Daniel and Merily Pompa each face charges of theft, misapplication of entrusted property and criminal conspiracy in an 150-page affidavit filed Friday by the Allegheny County District Attorney's office. A preliminary hearing date has not yet been set.

The Pompas in 2003 became guardians of two children, both aged 7 at the time, when their father, Leslie Young, fatally shot their mother Lisa Young, then turned the gun on himself in Sarasota, Fla. Lisa Young was Merily Pompa's cousin.

They also received guardianship of the children's trust fund.

Dr. Daniel Pompa is a chiropractor with an office in Wexford.

The charges have stemmed from how the couple spent more than $1.2 million from trust funds set up to care for two children.

The court had frozen the Pompas' assets and trust last November at the request of prosecutors.

Investigators say in their affidavit that only $88,790 remains from the trust fund after the Pompas regularly transferred cash into their own accounts plus bought a condo at Seven Springs for $984,177 that they then refurbished with expensive fixtures and renovations.
