Philip Robert Nast, M.D., known to his family and friends as "Bob," succumbed to a cardiac arrest at his home in Ripon, Calif., on Sept. 1.

Born to the late Sigmund and Bessie (née Braude) Nast, he was a nephew to the late Dr. Max Nast of Butler.

He graduated from Butler High School in 1946. He graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 1950 with honors including the Chi Epsilon Mu Chemistry Award, Phi Beta Kappa Award and the Pi Lambda Phi Honor Society.

Dr. Nast graduated from Cornell Medical School in 1954 and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. He completed a one-year internship at Bryn Mawr Hospital and then he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1955 as a captain. He served in active duty for two years until 1957, but remained in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1963.

After completing his residency in internal medicine at Bryn Mawr Hospital in 1960 and his residency in gastroenterology at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia in 1963, he went into private practice at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Dr. Nast founded the Bryn Mawr Medical Specialists Association in 1969. Known for his intelligent wit, sense of humor and excellent bedside manner, he served his patients, his community and the Bryn Mawr Hospital until he retired in 1999.

Dr. Nast is survived by his three children, Sheryl Metcalf Blankers and her husband, Bruce, and Jennifer Nast and David Nast; three grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Daniel Metcalf; his former spouse, Diane; two nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Faye Meyers.

<B>NAST</B> — Graveside services for Philip Robert Nast, M.D, who died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the B'nai Abraham Cemetery in Butler.A memorial service will be in Bryn Mawr.
