PITTSBURGH — Police said they shot and killed a man in Pittsburgh while they were investigating a burglary.

Police said they shot and killed the suspect about 1 a.m. today after he refused their requests to surrender.

The shooting happened at a social club called the Frogs Club in the East Liberty neighborhood.

Police said the alarm company received a call from inside the club asking that the alarm be shut off because the person inside did not know the code.

Pittsburgh Police Detective Peg Sherwood said police fired on the man, who was in his 20s, after he drew a pair of knives and lunged toward the officers.

BENEZETTE — A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening Wednesday for a north-central Pennsylvania visitors center the state hopes becomes a prime destination for viewing elk.The Elk Country Visitors Center in Benezette was built through a partnership between the state and the Keystone Elk Country Alliance. The commonwealth chipped in $6 million for the project, with another $6 million from private funding.Leaders hope the center becomes a hub for viewing one of the Northeast's largest elk herds. Economic development officials hope that brings in dollars for a rural part of the state that has long struggled financially.Fall is mating season for elk and considered a good time for tourists who want to catch glimpses of the massive animals.

FRACKVILLE — State police say two teenagers accused of attacking and robbing a hunter on state game lands in eastern Pennsylvania were arrested in Missouri.Police at the Frackville barracks said Philip Hemminger, 18, of Black River, N.Y., and Andrew O'Connor, 19, also of New York, were arrested Tuesday in Rolla, Mo. Police allege they were trying to pawn stolen merchandise, including guns stolen from Watertown, N.Y.Police said both were charged with robbery, criminal conspiracy, aggravated assault, theft and arson, among other crimes, and they face charges in Missouri.Authorities say the teens left New York earlier this month and traveled to Pennsylvania, where their vehicle became disabled.
