VOLANT, Lawrence County — Shops here will host the 20th annual Autumn Pumpkin Festival on Saturday and Sunday featuring activities for visitors of all ages.

Gina Scarborough, owner of Attic Treasures and festival chairwoman, said the event draws thousands.

"I think people enjoy coming because it's a quaint little town," Scarborough said. "It's an Amish community most families wouldn't be familiar with. Once they come one or two years, they start planning their weekend on making the trip up."

Events will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Scarborough said there will be a beekeeper to talk about making honey and haunted hallways both Saturday and Sunday.

"We try and find something for people of all ages," Scarborough said. "We have a craft corner for kids and many like the haunted hallways because they are aimed at people who like the scary side of fall."

A chili cook-off will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Volant Fire Hall. The cook-off is sponsored by The Kitchen Shoppe and benefits the fire department.

Saturday also will feature three musical acts: Connor Van Sickle, a keyboardist, who will be at the winery from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; guitarist Sue Gartland, who will be at Volant Mills; and the jazz group the Doug Butch Trio, which will perform from 1 to 3 p.m. at Special-Teas, Etc.

"People who come really enjoy the musical entertainment," said Brian Rhodes, president of Volant Winery.

The Sunday-only events feature guitarist Eric Bruening and the Fall Traveling Tea at which visitors will travel to nine locations in the community and have a tea created by one of the shop owners.
