Sweeney

Richard George "George" Sweeney, 72, of Main Street, Petrolia, passed away at 11:20 p.m. Sunday at the Chicora Medical Center after a courageous 12-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

He was born in Bruin on March 4, 1938, and was a son of the late William Sweeney and Edith Norris Sweeney.

He was a member of the Petrolia Presbyterian Church and had attended the Bruin Elementary School and the Karns City District schools.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and woodworking.

He was employed at Koppers Inc. in Petrolia in the carpenter shop and retired after 28 years because of ill health.

He married the former Gloria A. Miller on June 17, 1957, in Chicora. She survives along with a daughter, Vicki Hefferan and her husband, Gerald, of Butler; two sons, Richard Sweeney and his wife, Marcia, of East Brady and Jeffrey Sweeney and his wife, Kathy, of Chicora; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; two brothers, Larry Sweeney of Butler and John Sweeney of Bruin; two sisters, Doris Cooper and her husband, Ellis, of Chicora and Pat Brown and her husband, Thomas, of Butler; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Tami Lee Sweeney on March 22, 2003; and two brothers, Frank Sweeney and Roy Cook.

<B>SWEENEY</B> — Friends of Richard George "George" Sweeney, who died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the <B>Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home </B>in Petrolia and from 10 until 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Petrolia Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Richard F.
