JAIPUR, India — A juvenile court will decide early next week whether to grant bail to a Pittsburgh area American teenager charged with murder after his mother was found dead at a resort in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, the boy's attorney said Saturday.

The court in the tourist hub of Jodhpur is scheduled to take up the bail application on Monday to decide if Joncarlo Patton, 16, can be released into his father's custody after posting a bond, attorney Rahul Mehra said.

Patton's father, University of Pittsburgh business professor G. Richard Patton, was expected to arrive in India soon.

Earlier in the week, police formally charged the teenager with murder.

The teenager was picked up by police at an airport in Jodhpur on Aug. 13, a day after his mother, Cindy Iannarelli of Cecil, Pa., was found with her throat slit at a resort in the nearby town of Osian.

Patton was charged with attacking his mother with a knife and then dumping her body near the resort.

Soon after his arrest, in a written statement given to the juvenile court, Patton insisted that he was innocent. Patton said police were pressuring him to falsely confess.
