WARRENDALE — A Pittsburgh-area planning commission rejected a request by an Islamic group to erect a temporary modular mosque on land where the group's plans for a permanent mosque have been delayed by a lack of funding.

The Marshall Township, Allegheny County, planning commission rejected the request by a 3-2 vote on Monday, citing concerns about how the modular unit would look in a residential area.

The township north of the city approved the site for a permanent mosque in 2007, but funding problems have delayed construction.

The Islamic Center of North Pittsburgh has been trying to establish a temporary site. A trustee for the group told a Pittsburgh newspaper that it might take three to five years to build a permanent mosque.
