PHILADELPHIA — Former Butler resident David Bollinger is the assistant head football coach at Edison Fareira High School.
A graduate of Butler High and Slippery Rock University, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees in education, Bollinger also is the head girls varsity softball coach and a health and physical education teacher at the Philadelphia school.
He is the son of Ginny Gillespie of Pittsburgh and the late Perry Bollinger.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Mike Comrie to a $500,000, one-year contract Friday, giving them a proven scorer who might be capable of playing on one of their top three lines.The Penguins, looking for affordable scoring help because they have little salary cap space, signed forward Arron Asham to a $700,000, one-year contract two weeks ago.Comrie has scored 20 or more goals five times during nine NHL seasons with Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ottawa and the New York Islanders.Comrie will join the Penguins several months after marrying actress Hilary Duff.
NEW YORK — Washington outfielder Nyjer Morgan received an eight-game suspension Friday for his part in a brawl with Florida on Wednesday night.Marlins pitcher Chris Volstad was suspended for six games, pitcher Alex Sanabia for five, first baseman Gaby Sanchez for three, manager Edwin Rodriguez for one and pitcher Jose Veras was fined. Nationals pitcher Doug Slaten was suspended for three games, manager Jim Riggleman for two and third base coach Pat Listach for three.
NEWARK, N.J. — The NHL signed off on Ilya Kovalchuk's latest contract with the New Jersey Devils Friday, five weeks after rejecting the Russian's 17-year, $102 million deal because it violated the league's salary cap.The league approved a revised 15-year, $100 million deal after reaching an agreement with the players association on an amendment covering long-term contracts. Jay Grossman, Kovalchuk's agent, confirmed the agreement.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina Secretary of State investigators subpoenaed North Carolina lineman Marvin Austin, a person familiar with the situation said Friday.The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.Austin was one of 13 players who didn't travel to Atlanta for the opener against LSU because of an NCAA probe. Secretary of State Elaine Marshall's office is reviewing whether state sports agents laws have been broken.
OXFORD, Miss. — The NCAA cleared Mississippi quarterback Jeremiah Masoli to play Friday, a day before the Rebels' opener against Jacksonville State.The NCAA ruled earlier that the former Oregon player had to sit out a season after enrolling at Mississippi. But the university appealed and the NCAA Division I Subcommittee for Legislative Relief overturned the ruling.
